-------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: Invitation to Model Intercomparison Case Study on Mixed-Phase Cloud Chamber -- International Cloud Modeling Workshop (ICMW) 2024 in South Korea Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2023 15:00:00 -0600 From: Sisi Chen sisichen@ucar.edu CC: Wang, Aaron aaron.wang@pnnl.gov, Steve Krueger Steve.Krueger@utah.edu
Dear colleagues and friends,
We cordially invite you to participate in a model intercomparison case study that will be featured in the upcoming International Cloud Modeling Workshop (ICMW) 2024 in July. This specific case study focuses on the cloud chamber simulation of mixed-phase clouds, and aims to foster a detailed understanding of mixed-phase processes within a controlled environment.
Workshop Schedule and Venue: Date:8 to 12 July 2024 Location:Yonsei University, South Korea.
This workshop precedes the International Conference on Clouds and Precipitation (ICCP) in Jeju, South Korea. More information is available at https://iccp2024.kr/ https://iccp2024.kr/
Case Description & Science Objectives:
This case is focusing on the model intercomparison of mixed-phase processes in the Pi cloud chamber. The detailed case description with model configuration can be found in this Google Document: PI chamber mixed-phase case description https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Q_I0hx31kulrDaIFoezJGIQTEVyBYBtNVQuhSomBfZc/edit(let us know if you could not access the file).
The objectives of this case study are to answer: * How well do models represent mixed-phase processes, in particular those processes that determine the interactions of (supercooled) liquid and ice? * How supercooled liquid responds to various ice nucleus injection rates? * What is the critical point (microphysical conditions) when cloud glaciation happens?
We anticipate that the collective insights gained from this intercomparison effort will significantly contribute to the fundamental and process-level understanding of mixed-phase cloud processes.
Participation:
Individuals/groups who are interested in cloud modeling using DNS, LES, parcel models, theoretical models, ML emulators, and other numerical tools are all welcome to participate in the model comparison project. Feel free to forward it to others who are interested in participating.
If you are interested in participating in the model intercomparison, please reply to Sisi Chen (sisichen@ucar.edu mailto:sisichen@ucar.edu) by December 20, 2023, with your Name, Institution, and Email. You will then be added to the group mailing list for further information and updates.
Overall Timeline: Oct 2023 Announcements & invitations Dec 20, 2023 Confirmation of participation May 1, 2024 Results received from the participants May-July 2024 Data post-processing & communication with participants July 8-12 2024 International Cloud Modeling Workshop in Seoul Post workshop Paper summarizing the case
We’d also like to bring to your attention that there will be aCloud Chamber Workshop and Cloud Probe Workshopon the weekend following the ICMW and preceding the ICCP, from 13 to 14 July 2024 at the National Institute for Meteorological Studies (NIMS). Further details on the agenda for these workshops will be available soon on the ICCP website.
We very much look forward to your participation and seeing you in South Korea!
