The United States condemned the coup and ed upon the Sudanese military to immediately release the civilian officials, halt violence against protestors, and restore the transitional government; the U.S. also froze $700 in economic aid to Sudan's government. The coup was also condemned by the governments of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The European Union foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell and Secretary General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit expressed concern. Borrell ed for "the security forces to immediately release those they have unlawfully detained". The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the coup, ing for the prime minister to be released. He ded that the UN would "continue to stand" with the Sudanese people and that "t must be full respect for the constitutional charter to protect the hard- political transition." The United Nations Mission in Sudan and African Union (AU) issued similar statements. |
